With the implementation of “Learning Connections,” Decatur High School students will, for the first time, have an opportunity to explore new extracurricular interests during normal school hours.
Starting September 1st, learning connections will take place every Wednesday, filling an hour of the school day with creative, athletic, service- oriented, and curricular activities.
“The [administration wanted] to add something creative to our even blocks day, and we thought students would enjoy the change of pace,” Principal Lauri McKain said. The learning connection time will allow students with busy after-school schedules to participate in the extracurriculars that they may ordinarily miss out on.
Teachers will host connections in their classrooms. Assistant Principal Arlethea Williams assured students and staff that there will be ample space for connections to meet. Teachers who are currently floating due to construction will utilize extra lab or classroom space to sponsor their connection.
The connections will be scheduled on alternating blue and gold weeks, allowing students to participate in two activities. Students already began signing up, declaring their first, second, and third choices, and final decisions will be made by Aug 25. Students will be able to switch connections every twelve weeks. “Hopefully, students will find a group they really enjoy, but we want them to have choices,” McKain said.
