Give change a chance

It’s no secret: Decatur High is going through some changes this year. From the wacky class schedule and the unsatisfyingly shortened summer to the fact that we can’t enter through the vocational building doors anymore, it seems as if everything has flipped upside down.
Well, it has been flipped, but that might not be such a bad thing.
When I first heard about the calendar change, I was bummed. I had a job in place for the entire summer already, so the shortened summer meant I’d be losing a week’s pay. And knowing that I’d be starting school the second day of August sounded repulsive. But I thought to myself, “What can I do?” I knew that countless parents had already complained, so my complaining wasn’t going to accomplish anything. About two days before school started, however, I had this sort of epiphany. I was wishing that I could go back to the beach rather than having to start school again… then I realized: I would be going to the beach in about two months during the new fall break! Suddenly having to sit in a desk for seven hours a day seemed more bearable since I had something so thrilling to look forward to.
Moral of the story is, when I first heard about the hybrid calendar, I was opposed to it just because it meant I would have to adjust to change and distort what I was used to. But with so many changes coming around lately, I can’t have that attitude.
I know I’m not the only one who needs to be more accepting of change. I’m constantly hearing complaints lately about the new class schedule. Yeah, it’s confusing. But the good thing is, it’s different everyday. You won’t get as bored sitting in the same class for 90 minutes everyday. On the same token, having the occasional block day gives you more time for assignments. The change even from day to day is good, because it keeps things fresh.
I’m not trying to preach by saying that all change is good, but I do suggest you become more open. Think of all the good it can bring rather than highlighting the negative. With so many transformations and adjustments that you will encounter in the future, you can’t afford to be averse to every single one.
